A Beverly Hills medical client of ours returned 1,233% ROAS on paid social we built and managed. Dead Soxy went from 2.23x to 4.64x return on ad spend after we rebuilt the creative and the audiences. I lead with those two because the cost of Instagram ads is only half the question. The other half is what comes back. I have been buying media since 2012, and here is how Instagram ad costs actually work in 2026, what drives them, and how to set a budget without me pretending there is one number that fits your business.
There is no fixed price, and anyone who gives you one is guessing
Instagram ads are sold in an auction. Every time someone opens the app, Meta runs a bid among every advertiser who wants to reach that person, and the winner pays based on competition and on how likely that person is to act. That means the cost of a thousand impressions, a click or a purchase is different for a sock brand and a plastic surgeon, different in Los Angeles and in Omaha, different in March and the week before Christmas. I will not print a table of average costs because any table would be wrong for you by the time you read it. What I can tell you is what moves the number, because those levers are the same for everyone.
What drives the cost of Instagram ads
Your objective
You tell Meta what you want: awareness, traffic, leads, sales. The further down that list you go, the more each result costs, because you are asking the system to find people who will act, not just look. Paying for sales is almost always the better buy, because reach that does not turn into sales is a cost with nothing on the other side.
Your industry and the competition in it
Medical aesthetics, legal, finance and real estate are expensive because the customer is worth a lot and every competitor knows it. Apparel and consumer goods are cheaper per thousand people reached but need volume to make up for a smaller order. The 1,233% ROAS medical campaign had a high cost per click. It did not matter, because a single consultation was worth many times what it cost to generate.
Your audience
Narrow, high intent audiences cost more per impression and less per sale. Broad audiences are cheap to reach and expensive to convert. The Dead Soxy rebuild moved spend toward people who had already engaged with the brand, and the cost per thousand went up while the cost per order went down. The second number pays the bills.
Your creative
This is the lever most businesses underrate. Meta charges less to show ads people respond to and more to show ads people scroll past. Creator footage and short form video edited in Adobe Premiere Pro consistently costs us less per result than polished product shots, which is why creative was the first thing we rebuilt for Dead Soxy and why our paid clients so often start with a UGC library.
Placement and time of year
Stories, Reels, feed and Explore each price differently and shift as the platform pushes one format or another, so we test placements on every account. And from early November to the end of December every retailer is bidding, so costs rise for everyone, including businesses with nothing to do with holiday shopping. January is usually cheaper.
Your landing page
Costs do not stop at the click. If the landing page is slow, confusing or does not match the ad, you pay for the click and get nothing. Fixing the page is often the cheapest way to cut cost per sale.
How much should you budget
You set your own budget and can start with a few dollars a day. The real question is how much you need to spend to learn anything. Meta's system needs a certain number of conversions per week before it can optimise toward buyers, so a budget too small to generate those sits in a learning phase and never gets efficient. The right starting budget is whatever gets you enough results per week to read.
The way I frame it on a first call is this. Tell me what a customer is worth and what you can afford to spend for a month without panicking. I will tell you whether that is enough to run a real test, and we will agree a ROAS target before a dollar goes live. That is how Dead Soxy got from 2.23x to 4.64x, not by spending more but by spending the same money better.
What an agency adds to the cost
At Robbp Media, paid social is a management fee on top of your ad spend. The spend goes to Meta and you own the account. The fee covers strategy, creative, audiences, weekly optimisation and a plain language report. We agree a ROAS target before launch and everything is month to month after ninety days. You can read how we run it on our paid social agency page, and see where it sits alongside organic and UGC on our social media marketing agency page for Los Angeles.
Questions people ask
What is the minimum I can spend on Instagram ads?
Meta lets you start with a few dollars a day, so there is no meaningful minimum from the platform. The practical minimum is whatever generates enough conversions each week for the system to learn from, and that depends on what a result costs in your industry. Too small a budget never leaves the learning phase.
Why are my Instagram ads so expensive?
Usually one of four things: a competitive industry, creative that people scroll past, an audience too broad to convert or too narrow to scale, or a landing page that wastes the clicks. Dead Soxy's costs dropped when we fixed creative and audiences at the same time.
Are Instagram ads cheaper than Google ads?
Different, not cheaper. Google reaches people already searching for what you sell, so intent is higher and so is the price per click. Instagram reaches people who were not looking, which costs less per impression and needs stronger creative to convert. Many of our clients run both.
How do you charge for managing Instagram ads?
A management fee on top of your ad spend. You pay Meta directly and own the account. We agree a ROAS target before launch and report against it weekly. The fee is quoted after one call based on spend level and how much creative production is involved.
How long before I know if the ads are working?
You can read early ROAS within two to three weeks once the account has enough conversions to leave the learning phase. I ask for ninety days to prove the system and refine creative and audiences. After that it is month to month, so the numbers have to keep earning it.
