Dead Soxy is a sock brand, not a giant, and when they came to Robbp Media their Instagram ads were returning 2.23x on spend. That is the kind of number that makes a small business owner wonder whether the whole thing is worth the trouble. We rebuilt the creative and the audience structure and the same budget returned 4.64x. A Beverly Hills medical client, a single practice, returned 1,233% ROAS on paid social we built and managed. So my short answer to whether Instagram ads are worth it for a small business is yes, under conditions, and I have watched enough small businesses waste money to want to spell them out.
When Instagram ads are worth it
You know what a customer is worth
This is the first thing I ask on a call and the thing most small businesses cannot answer. If a consultation is worth three thousand dollars to a surgeon and it costs a few hundred to generate one, the ads are obviously worth it. If a sock order is forty dollars and the buyer comes back twice a year, the math is tighter and the ads have to be efficient. Either way you cannot judge the ads until you know the number they are being judged against.
Your margin can carry the cost
Instagram ads are worth it when there is enough room between what a sale costs you and what it brings in to pay for the ad and still leave profit. Dead Soxy at 2.23x was technically profitable but there was barely room for the cost of goods and the management. At 4.64x the brand could grow on it. If your margin is thin, fix the offer or the price first, because ads amplify whatever economics you already have.
You have, or will make, honest creative
The Dead Soxy rebuild started with the creative. Polished product shots were replaced with creator footage of real people wearing the socks, and that footage cost less per result immediately. For the medical client the ads looked like the organic video people already trusted from the practice. If the only creative you have is a logo and a stock photo, the ads will cost more and return less, and that is not Instagram's fault.
Your landing page and follow up are ready
Ads send people somewhere. If the page is slow, or the booking form has nine fields, or nobody answers the DM for two days, you paid for attention and threw it away. We treat the landing page and the follow up as part of the campaign, and run DM automation in ManyChat so an inquiry gets a reply in seconds.
You can afford to test for ninety days
Meta's system needs conversions to learn from. A business that spends for two weeks, panics and stops never gets out of the learning phase and never finds out what the ads could have done. I ask every paid client for ninety days with an agreed ROAS target, and after that it is month to month. If it is not hitting the target by then, I will say so.
When Instagram ads are not worth it
If you cannot say what a customer is worth, do not spend yet. If your margin is so thin that even a strong return would not leave profit, fix the business first. If your audience is not on Instagram, and for some B2B and older demographics it is not, put the money on a platform where they are. If you have no content and no plan to make any, build an organic presence first, because the ads will be expensive and you will not learn anything from them. And if you are hoping ads will fix a product people do not want, they will only tell you faster that it is not wanted.
Organic first, ads second
Dr. Zoumalan went from 6,000 to 109,000 Instagram followers with organic content only, no paid growth. Dr. Andrew Brunswick went from 9,590 to 115,000 the same way. I bring them up in a piece about ads because the organic content on those accounts is exactly what makes ads cheap when we run them. The videos that already hold attention become the ads, and Meta charges less to show ads people respond to. A small business that builds organic content first walks into paid with proven creative instead of guesses.
What it costs to have someone run them
You can run Instagram ads yourself, and for a small test that is fine. Small businesses hire us because the difference between 2.23x and 4.64x was not the budget, it was the creative and the audience structure. At Robbp Media paid social is a management fee on top of your ad spend. You pay Meta directly and own the account. We agree a ROAS target before launch and report weekly in plain language. The details are on our paid social agency page, and how paid fits alongside organic and UGC is laid out on our social media marketing agency page for Los Angeles.
Questions people ask
Are Instagram ads worth it for a small business with a small budget?
Yes, if the budget is big enough to generate a readable number of conversions each week and you give it ninety days. A budget too small to leave the learning phase is money spent to learn nothing. Tell me what a customer is worth and I will tell you what a real test costs.
Do Instagram ads work for service businesses?
Yes, and some of our best results are services. A Beverly Hills medical client returned 1,233% ROAS. The difference is that you measure cost per booked consultation or quote rather than direct sales, and you need DM automation and fast follow up so the leads you pay for do not go cold.
Should I run Instagram ads or grow organically?
Organic first if you have time, ads first if you have margin and need revenue now. Dr. Zoumalan built 109,000 followers organically and that content later made ads cheaper. Most of our clients run both, with the organic videos that already perform becoming the ads.
How do I know if my Instagram ads are working?
One number: return on ad spend, or cost per lead if you sell a service, read weekly against a target you agreed before launch. Likes, reach and engagement rate on ads tell you almost nothing. Dead Soxy's ads looked fine on those and were underperforming until we read ROAS.
Why did my Instagram ads not work before?
Usually creative that looked like an advert, an audience that was too broad, a landing page that lost the click, or a test that was stopped before the system could learn. Dead Soxy had the first two problems and fixing both at once more than doubled the return on the same spend.
