Are ChatGPT ads worth it? For some businesses, yes, and right now is the cheapest moment to find out. For others, not yet, and no amount of budget will change that. We run ChatGPT ads for clients at RobbP Media, alongside their Meta, Instagram, TikTok and Google Ads, so this is not a theory piece. It is how I decide, account by account, whether ChatGPT ads deserve a slice of the budget, and what a fair test looks like before you commit real money.
What a ChatGPT ad actually is
People use ChatGPT the way they used to use a search bar, except they ask the whole question. Which tailor can turn a suit around in a week. What to look for in a production company. Which dog food suits an older dog. When the conversation matches what you sell, ChatGPT can show a clearly labelled sponsored placement under its answer, with your name, a short message and a link.
OpenAI opened its self-serve ads platform to US advertisers in July 2026. The ad is matched to what the conversation is about rather than to a profile of the person, which makes it behave more like search than social. The person has just told ChatGPT what they want, and your ad is the next thing they see. That is the whole case for it in one sentence: you show up at the moment someone is asking for exactly what you do.
Who ChatGPT ads are worth it for
The businesses I would test first are the ones whose buyers already ask questions before they buy. An ecommerce brand that ships across the country is the cleanest fit, because the targeting limits below barely matter and the sale is tracked straight through the pixel. A service business that people research before hiring, an agency, a consultant, a software product, a specialist trade, is a close second, because ChatGPT is increasingly where that research starts.
The other group is anyone whose competitors are not there yet. Every ad platform has had a period when attention was cheap because few advertisers had worked it out. Meta had one, Google had one, and the brands that tested early learned the platform while it was forgiving. ChatGPT ads are in that window now. A controlled test today teaches you more, for less, than the same test a year from now.
Who should wait
Some categories cannot advertise at all. Health and medical, financial products, political and dating ads are not allowed on ChatGPT right now. If you run a medical practice, ChatGPT ads are not an option, and anyone who tells you otherwise has not read the policy. You can still be named inside ChatGPT's answers through answer engine optimization, which I cover below.
Local businesses should go in with eyes open. Targeting is by country, not by city or radius, so a salon in Santa Monica pays to be shown to someone in Ohio unless the ad itself is clearly about the area. We handle that by writing the location into the ad and the landing page, and it works, but it is less precise than a radius on Meta or Google. If your whole market sits within ten miles, I would usually put the first dollars into Google and Meta and test ChatGPT second.
And if your tracking is not working, wait. Any channel judged on clicks alone will look either brilliant or useless, and neither will be true. Fix the measurement first. Our free ad account self-audit checklist starts there for a reason.
What ChatGPT ads cost
You set the budget and pay OpenAI directly from your own ads account, the same way you pay Meta or Google. There is no fixed price per click, because like every auction it depends on how many advertisers want the same conversations. That is exactly why early tests are cheaper: fewer people are bidding.
Our management for ChatGPT ads starts from $1,500 a month, on top of the ad spend, and most clients run it as part of a wider plan with their other channels rather than on its own. What I recommend is a small test budget we agree together, enough to buy real conversions, not a big commitment based on hope.
How to test ChatGPT ads properly
Tracking comes before anything else. We install the OpenAI pixel, set up the one conversion that matters to the business, usually a lead or a purchase, and test it until we can see a real one recorded. Every link carries UTM tags so the traffic shows up in your analytics next to every other channel. Only then does a dollar go out.
Then we test the way we test everywhere. Several messages, several angles, each answering a question a buyer actually asks, small budgets, and a clear read on the one number that matters: cost per lead for a service business, return on ad spend for ecommerce. Compare it honestly with what Meta and Google deliver for the same business. If ChatGPT beats them or matches them, it earns more budget. If it does not, you stop, and you have spent a small, agreed amount to know for certain.
ChatGPT ads and AEO are different jobs
There are two ways to show up in ChatGPT, and people confuse them. Answer engine optimization earns you a mention inside the answer itself, by making sure your website, your reviews and what other sites say about you give the AI a clear reason to name you. ChatGPT ads buy you a labelled place directly under that answer.
AEO takes weeks to build and keeps paying. Ads start the day you launch and stop the day you stop paying. The strongest position is both: named in the answer and present under it. Our SEO and AEO service handles the first, and our ChatGPT ads service handles the second, as one plan with the rest of your paid ads.
My verdict
ChatGPT ads are worth testing in 2026 for ecommerce brands that ship nationally and for service businesses whose buyers research before they hire, provided the tracking is solid and the test has a clear budget and a clear number to beat. They are not worth it yet for medical practices, which are not allowed to advertise there, or for very local businesses that would be better served by a radius on Google and Meta first. The only wrong move is spending on them without measuring what comes back, which is the same mistake people made with Instagram ads, and I wrote about whether Instagram ads are worth it for exactly that reason.
Questions people ask
Are ChatGPT ads worth it for a small business?
They can be, if your buyers research before they buy, you ship or serve nationally, and your tracking works. Start with a small, agreed test budget and judge it on cost per lead or return on ad spend against your other channels.
Can you target a city with ChatGPT ads?
Not yet. Targeting is by country, so local businesses write their area into the ad and the landing page to make the message clearly about where they serve.
Which businesses cannot run ChatGPT ads?
Health and medical, financial products, political and dating ads are not allowed on ChatGPT right now. Medical practices can still be named in ChatGPT's answers through AEO.
How much do ChatGPT ads cost?
You set the budget and pay OpenAI directly, and the price depends on the auction for the conversations you want. Our management starts from $1,500 a month on top of ad spend.
Should I run ChatGPT ads or do AEO?
They do different jobs. AEO gets you named inside the answer and keeps working over time; ChatGPT ads put you directly under the answer from the day you launch. Most businesses that can advertise there will want both.
