On 11 September 2026 we started SEO and AEO work for Mr James, a bespoke tailor in Playa del Rey. The site was getting about 11 sessions a day and 13 visits a week from search. By 19 October it was at about 43 sessions a day, search visits had more than doubled, it held the number one share of local voice in the map pack for "bespoke tailor" on a 7x7 grid, 19 of the 50 keywords we track sat in the top 10, and the business was named in 10 of 28 answers we pulled from AI assistants. That last number is the one this article is about. I run Robbp Media, a social media marketing agency in Los Angeles, and the question I get asked most after social media pricing is what answer engine optimization actually is and whether a small business needs it.
What answer engine optimization is
Search engine optimization is the work of getting your pages ranked when someone types a query into Google. Answer engine optimization, AEO, is the work of getting your business named when someone asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI Overview a question and reads a single answer instead of a page of links. The person asking who the best bespoke tailor near Playa del Rey is does not see ten blue links any more. They see one paragraph, and either your name is in it or it is not.
The two disciplines overlap heavily, which is why we run them together on the SEO and AEO service. The assistants pull from the same web Google indexes. A site that is technically healthy, fast, well structured, full of specific expert content and mentioned on other reputable sites tends to do well in both. The difference is in emphasis. AEO cares more about whether your pages answer a question directly in plain language, whether your schema markup tells a machine exactly what you are and where you are, and whether other sites corroborate that. Ranking third on Google is still a fine outcome. Being the third name an assistant considered and did not mention is nothing.
What we actually did for Mr James
The site now has 42 pages and 54 articles live. That is a lot of content for a tailor, but every piece answers a question a real customer asks, like what a bespoke suit costs, how many fittings it takes, how long the process runs, and how bespoke differs from made to measure. Each page has a short direct answer near the top in the kind of language a person would use, and then the depth underneath. That structure is what an assistant lifts from.
Underneath the content we fixed the technical layer: speed, broken internal links, missing schema, pages Google could not crawl properly. We built out the local footprint so the business profile, the site and the mentions on other sites all agree on the name, the address and the service. And we track every week whether the five main assistants name the business when asked the questions a customer would ask. Ten out of 28 is where it stood on 19 October.
This is the same system that runs inside our $199 per month SEO and AEO tool. It publishes an expert article a day, applies every fix its scan finds or lets you approve each one, builds real mentions and links monthly, tracks weekly whether ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overview name your business, and tracks rankings weekly in your city. The Market Scan gives any domain a score out of 100 across site health, speed, content, schema, Google visibility, AI answers and authority, so you can see where you stand before you spend anything.
Who needs it
Any business whose customers ask a question before they buy. That is most local service businesses: tailors, dentists, plastic surgeons, med spas, lawyers, contractors, specialist retailers. If a person might ask an assistant who they should see for something in their city, you need to be in the answer. Medical aesthetics is a clear case. Prospective patients ask AI about procedures, recovery and surgeons constantly, and the practices that get named get the consultation.
Ecommerce brands need it in a different way. The question is less about who is near me and more about which product solves a particular problem, and the assistants answer from reviews, comparison content and mentions. If your brand only exists on your own site and in your ads, you are invisible to that query.
How it fits with social
Social gets you seen by people who are scrolling. Search and AI answers get you found by people who are already looking. Dr. Zoumalan went from 6,000 Instagram followers to 109,000 organically, and that audience is valuable, but the person asking an assistant for a facial plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills tonight is further down the funnel than anyone scrolling a feed. Many of our social media clients run the SEO and AEO tool alongside the retainer because the two lanes feed different ends of the same pipeline.
Questions people ask
Is AEO just SEO with a new name?
Mostly no. They share foundations, a healthy fast site with real content and real mentions, but AEO puts the weight on direct answers, schema and corroboration from other sites, because an assistant writes one paragraph rather than ranking ten links. We run them together because the work overlaps and the goals differ.
How long does AEO take to show results?
Mr James started on 11 September and was named in 10 of 28 assistant answers by 19 October, with search visits more than doubled over the same stretch. Five to six weeks is fast and depends on the starting point. Most businesses should expect to see real movement inside the first ninety days.
Can I do it myself?
Partly. You can write direct answers to customer questions and keep your business profile accurate. The technical fixes, schema, mention building and weekly tracking across five assistants are where most owners run out of hours, which is exactly what the $199 per month tool was built to take off your plate.
How do you know if an AI assistant names my business?
We ask. Every week we run a fixed set of the questions your customers would ask across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overview, record which businesses each answer names, and report the share. For Mr James that was 10 of 28 on 19 October, tracked against the same questions each week.
What does the Market Scan measure?
Enter a domain and it returns a score out of 100 across seven categories: site health worth 20, speed 10, content 15, schema 15, Google visibility 20, AI answers 15 and authority 5. It shows where the gaps are before you spend a dollar fixing them, and which gap matters most.
